KANGAR: Perlis Puteri Umno chief Zuraidah Zainal Abidin and a 57-year-old businessman claimed trial in the Syariah High Court here Wednesday to committing khalwat (close proximity).
Zuraidah, 34, who is also the Arau Puteri Umno division chief, and Burhanuddin Ismail allegedly committed the offence in a room at a hotel in Persiaran Jubli Emas here, at about 1.30am on March 3.
Zuraidah, from Kampung Changkat Lada, Mata Ayer and Burhanuddin, of Jalan Hiliran in Terengganu, were charged with committing the offence which is punishable under Section 9(1)(1) of the Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment and carries a RM5,000 fine, three-year jail term or both, on conviction.
Syariah High Court judge Jaidi Ahmad fixed the case to be mentioned on May 14.
Chief Syariah prosecutor Khairul Anuar Ahmad prosecuted while Zuraidah and Burhanuddin were represented by Syariah counsel Rabiatul Adawiah Ramli.
